Through a series of short films, audiences are invited to explore the meaning of where one is from and how it influences how they create and what they create. Whether you’re returning home, rediscovering home, or redefining your home, art proves to be a meaningful part of the process as a way to reclaim, resist, and feel renewed.
Earth to KB (short film)
Earth to KB follows KB Brookins, a Black, queer, and trans writer from Texas. Blending poetry performances with intimate moments shared with their community in Austin, the film explores the expansive worlds within KB’s work.
This short film series is followed by the generative workshop Freedom House, led by acclaimed poet and cultural worker KB Brookins (featured subject of the short film Earth to KB). In collaboration with the ACLU of Texas, the architecture of activism meets the artistry of creative practice as Brookins invites participants to explore their social justice work as a house, with each room representing a distinct facet of their activism. Participants will be encouraged to furnish those spaces with elements of their own artistic expression. Attendees will leave with a blueprint for integrating art and advocacy. Participants will be asked to bring a notebook and a pen; a projector will be used to share visual materials throughout the session.
