Freedom House Workshop and Community Open Mic Night

  • Nia Cultural Center Juneteenth Legacy Gallery 2217 The Strand Galveston, TX, 77550 United States (map)

Join Galveston Art in Action and G.I.V.E.R.S. in hosting Texas poet KB Brookins for their Freedom House workshop, a great follow-up to Juneteenth celebrations. Community members of all ages are welcome to attend this workshop about the power of poetry in social justice movements. You'll get to hear some readings from KB's new book, Freedom House, and will be inspired and supported in writing your own pieces. We welcome everyone who has poems, stories, comedy, music, etc. to share during the open mic at the end.

Snacks will be provided, and dinner at a nearby restaurant will follow the event. All costs (workshop, snacks, dinner) are covered by an Indivisible grant, so it's free for the community.

Access information:

  • Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided.

  • A HEPA filter will be available at the workshop. Due to adverse weather conditions, the dinner following the event will take place indoors.

To request additional accommodations for this event, please contact Lauren Oertel at lauren.o@indivisible.org or 707-228-0260 by June 23, 2023.
